We had ourselves a leisurely morning and picked up a new travel companion: an Aussie bloke by the name of Struan. He joined us as we hopped on a minibus bound for Bocas.

The trip was a slow winding journey through the mountains. We arrived in Almirante to catch the ferry over to Bocas del Toro. The town of Bocas is a small, backpacker-friendly Caribbean town. It reminded me a bit of Caye Caulker in Belize.

We put our gear down at Heike Hostel and went out for some good cheap local food. Afterwards we walked around the town, looking for a nice beach, but found nothing. We found out later that the town of Bocas doesn’t really have it’s own beach, but there are plenty of folks with boats willing to take you to a number of other island beaches nearby.

We met up with a few other travelers (more Aussies, a guy from Spain and an Israeli) and the fellas all talked about renting a boat to go surfing in the morning. I decided early that I’d pass this time. I hadn’t had a relaxing day to myself in a long time and it was high on my list of priorities.
